About S.H.S.A. (Suffolk Horse Show Association)

A few horsewomen who were tired of traveling far distances to show their horses formed the Suffolk Horse Show Association (SHSA) in 1990. The association has grown over the past 14 years to include many riders from all over the southeastern Virginia area as well as northeastern North Carolina. Although farms in the Suffolk area host many shows, there are several shows hosted by farms in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Windsor.

SHSA promotes good horsemanship and stresses show safety.
SHSA is affiliated with VHSA and offers various types of classes for all breeds and disciplines (see CLASS SPECS). Some classes count toward VHSA point standings (dertermined by Show Manager). SHSA also offers classes for fun, such as the costume class offered by the barn or barns showing closest to Halloween. Each barn is given the opportunity to offer other classes for fun or cash (as in dollar bareback)! All show judges of Virginia Horse Show Association (VHSA) Associate rated shows are VHSA Senior members.

SHSA hosts an end of the season awards banquet which provides us with an opportunity to get together in fellowship, to reflect upon the past season and to recognize the accomplishments of our riders and their horses. Trophies, plaques, etched glass frames, blankets, ribbons and much more are presented to the six top riders in each class. There are door prizes aplenty and raffles to take part in.

The purpose of the SHSA shall be as follows:
1. To expand and enhance the image of equestrian sport and competition.
2. To certify show recognition and assign dates to hosting farms or organizations.
3. To encourage participation in all SHSA activities by all members in good standing of SHSA.
4. To make adequate and fair rules governing activities and to enforce them for the common benefit.
